Shortly after the 1988 restoration of The Carriage House was completed, the need for yet more guestrooms was realized. The Parks contacted the property owner next to The Carriage House to express interest in buying the house to someday become a part of the Inn.
In 1999, the property was purchased and the restoration began. Dan Elswick, the house doctor with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, examined The Carriage House and The Garden Cottage. It is his opinion that both houses were built around the same time during the late 1800s. Initially the plan was to name the house “The Cottage.” Dan Elswick’s appropriate suggestion to name the house The Garden Cottage appealed to the Parks. The Garden Cottage porch is fronted by a garden framed with two foot picket fencing.
